What is the AEP Ohio Power Rewards: Smart Thermostat program?
- The AEP Ohio Power Rewards: Smart Thermostat program is a residential demand response program designed to reduce electricity demand associated with cooling or heating your home during peak periods.
- Participants agree to limited adjustments of up to 3 degrees on their thermostat during peak electric demand periods. These events may last up to four hours. Enrolled customers can anticipate up to 16 adjustment events per year. Adjustments will typically not occur on weekends or holidays.
- Participants will receive a one-time $50 digital gift card for successfully enrolling their home into the program and an annual $25 digital gift card at the end of each year in which they participated in at least 75% of events called.
How will I know if I’m eligible to enroll?
Eligible participants must:
- Be an active AEP Ohio residential electric customer;
- Use an eligible, internet-connected (Wi-Fi) thermostat that controls central air-conditioning in the summer and/or electric heating in the winter; and
- Agree to terms and conditions as outlined by each thermostat manufacturer.
Why would I be ineligible for Power Rewards at this time?
Customers would be ineligible for the Power Rewards program if they:
- Do not have a qualifying Wi-Fi thermostat
- Do not receive electric delivery service from AEP Ohio
- Do not have central air-conditioning and/or electric heating
How do I sign up for the Power Rewards program?
It’s easy: Visit our enrollment page and click the “Sign Up” button. You will be prompted to enter your thermostat username and password, accept the terms and confirm your enrollment information is correct. To ensure a quick review process, make sure your enrollment information matches AEP Ohio’s primary account holder’s information.

What is my enrollment incentive?
Participants will receive a one-time $50 digital gift card when they successfully enroll their home into the program.
If you received a rebate from AEP Ohio for the purchase of your smart thermostat, you are not eligible to receive the $50 enrollment rebate.
How do I receive the annual $25 digital gift card participation incentive?
As long as you participate in at least 75% of the Power Rewards events throughout the year and your device remains online, you will receive a $25 digital gift card to the email address associated with your account. Participation incentives are issued after the end of summer cooling events.
How will I know that a temperature adjustment is in progress?
Depending on your thermostat provider, notifications may appear on the thermostat or in your web or mobile application.
How will my thermostat be adjusted?
- At the start of an event, your thermostat will be automatically adjusted (up in the summer or down in the winter) by up to 3 degrees from the current temperature setting.
- The adjustment will typically last no more than four hours on non-holiday weekdays.
- Once the temperature adjustment is over, your thermostat will return to its normal set point and/or schedule.
- In some cases, your thermostat may be adjusted up to 3 degrees prior to an adjustment event to pre-cool or pre-heat your home.
- You can opt out of an event at any time from your mobile device, web browser or thermostat.
How will participating in the program affect the comfort level in my home?
Adjustment events will only affect the temperature by a few degrees, with minimal impact on comfort. You can easily opt out of an adjustment event at any time. Your participation is voluntary, and you will retain control of all of your thermostat functions.
Am I allowed to opt out of an adjustment event?
Yes. At any time during an adjustment event, you can opt out from your thermostat, mobile device or web app. To opt out of an event, you can simply change the temperature on your device back to your preferred comfort level. You will receive a pop-up message to confirm you would like to opt out of the event. Depending on your thermostat manufacturer, you can also opt out by clicking “Learn More” on the notification on your app or device and by navigating to the opt-out experience from there.
