Frequently Asked Questions
What is the BOLT Study?
BOLT is a study from Southern California Edison (SCE) to understand how home energy devices, like batteries, electric vehicles, and smart thermostats, can help support the electric grid. When enrolled, your device may respond to energy events, and you’ll receive rewards for participating.
If you have any additional questions or need help signing up contact BOLTsupport@resideo.com

How do the rewards work?
When you enroll in the study with a qualifying device (an electric vehicle or battery system), you’ll receive a prepaid Mastercard as a one-time enrollment reward. You’ll also earn an annual reward—another prepaid Mastercard — each year you stay enrolled and actively participate during the summer season (June 1 to September 30). See SCE’s BOLT Study Terms and Conditions for more info.
Important details:
- Rewards are given per eligible device.
- Smart thermostats must be paired with a battery or EV to qualify. They are not eligible on their own.
- Participation is free, and you can opt your devices out of any energy event at any time.

How do energy events work?
Energy events may be called in response to emergencies, overworked electrical grids, high wholesale energy prices, or for testing purposes. Energy events can occur anytime throughout the year. Multiple events may be called in the same calendar day.
When an energy event is called, SCE will notify you prior to the event start time. Your EV, Battery, and/or Smart Thermostat will make adjustments during the event. You always have the option to override by re-adjusting your settings based on your comfort and choice during an energy event. However, customers who override all events dispatched in a calendar year may be removed from the study.
If you have any additional questions or need help signing up contact BOLTsupport@resideo.com
Can I opt out of an event?
Yes. You can opt out at any time by changing your settings in the device’s app. Participation is voluntary.
If you have any additional questions or need help signing up contact BOLTsupport@resideo.com
Do I still have control over my device?
Yes. Whether you’re using a battery, EV, or thermostat, you can always override an energy event by adjusting your device’s settings in its app.
If you have any additional questions or need help signing up contact BOLTsupport@resideo.com
Can I use my battery or EV for backup during the study?
Yes. If you set your battery to backup-only mode, it won’t respond to grid events during that time. You can change the mode anytime in your device’s app.
If you have any additional questions or need help signing up contact BOLTsupport@resideo.com
Why did my device change behavior unexpectedly?
During an energy event, your enrolled device may charge, discharge to the grid, or adjust setpoints automatically. This behavior helps reduce strain on the grid and is part of the study design. You can always change your settings if needed.
